After returning home from an opening day bowhunt in Kentucky, I realized just how different an early September bowhunt differs from the early October bowhunt that many of us are used to.

This is the first time I’ve ever bowhunted for whitetails in 90-degree temperatures, but I was able to harvest a respectable buck at Central Kentucky Outdoors.

Hunters have to have lightweight clothing that will help them stay as cool as possible, and protect them from all of the mosquitos. Thankfully, I had a Thermacell with me. Without one, I wouldn’t have been able to stay in a tree for long periods of time.

Another thing to consider is what you will do with a deer if you harvest one in extreme heat. This is where my Igloo Sportsman cooler came in. It kept the meat cold until I was able to get home with it.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any advice for combating the chiggers. If you do, please share any ideas with me.

I’m living proof that a successful early season deer hunt is possible if you are prepared for the heat, mosquitos, and meat care.
