A deer shot through the heart with a high-powered rifle may run 100 yards before crashing, and lung shots will give equally long trails. In actuality, a deer can run that distance in a few seconds, so its an ethical demise.

If you are hunting in rugged, thick, or steep country, this distance can be a nightmare and create a day’s work retrieving the animal. In these cases, you want to shoot a deer at the base of the neck so that it is immobilized and dies on the spot.

These five neck shots are good examples, but make sure you have a good rest and an accurate rifle if you want to make a similarly accurate shot.
