Florida’s Otherside Invitational

196

The Otherside Invitational is an annual offshore open-fishing tournament organized by longtime Florida angler Ed Dwyer. The format of the weekend tournament is simple: best three-fish combo wins bragging rights as Top Boat.

The event regularly brings together top anglers from all over the East Coast and beyond, and this year’s tournament was no exception. Top Boat honors went to the anglers aboard the Melbourne, FL-based boat Aquadiziak. Its skipper, Devon Culp, piloted his boat to success by targeting the tuna-rich waters north of the Bahamas. Culp’s team put together a three-tuna catch weighing 212 lbs! Read more about Team Aquadiziak and the rest of this year’s tournament competition in this article from Florida Today.

otherside_dolphinDevon Culp of Melbourne, captain of the Aquadiziak, claims it was the faux-flower necklace made by one of his crew’s children that brought them good luck.

Whatever helped them catch their winning trio of yellowfin tuna during the 2014 Ed Dwyer’s Otherside Invitational last weekend, it worked.

“We didn’t catch our good fish until 7 in the evening,” said Culp, who owns Devon’s Automotive in Satellite Beach. “There were tuna jumping all around us at sunset.”

The crew aboard Culp’s 31-foot center console left from Fort Pierce Inlet late Friday, April 26, and fished the bluewater north of the Bahamas on Saturday.

Their three heaviest tuna — the largest was a 95-pounder — earned them Top Boat with an aggregate weight of 212 pounds. One, a 59-pounder, was caught on a spinning rod and large popping plug cast into a tuna feeding frenzy.
