The Year’s Top 10 Fishing Kayaks

For many anglers, the rig of choice for getting on the water is a kayak. Kayak fishing offers many advantages. Once you get past the initial investment, it’s economical. It’s quiet. You get exercise when doing it. In many cases, it gives you an advantage over bigger boats because it allows you to get into spots that are too small for those boats to access. Also, because it’s quiet, it’s stealthiness can be a major advantage when targeting certain species of fish. Here in Southern California, the white seabass is one that comes to mind where the kayak angler has a big advantage over private boaters or open party boats.

In this article, Yak Angler editor Mark Watanabe runs down the top 10 picks as chosen by their community…

yakangler2013 saw many companies following the industry trend of the “lawn chair” style kayak seat. Six of this year’s best fishing kayaks picked in our community poll have a framed seat, proving consumers are looking at comfort while fishing as one of their top priorities. Half the kayaks from last year’s Top Ten list managed to stay on for 2013, and almost half are brand new models for 2013/14.

1. Old Town “Predator 13” is new this year and was the top pick among kayak fishermen, capturing 15% of the votes. Old Town has two Predator models: the Predator 13, and the more maneuverable “Predator MX”.

2. Hobie “Mirage Pro Angler 14” made the list again this year. The Hobie Pro Angler 14 was picked by 12% of the kayak fishermen surveyed. There are two models of Mirage Pro Angler the 12 and 14.
